Qype: Hafenklang Exil in Hamburg

Hamburg - Nightlife - Clubs

At last, I've found a decent dnb night in Hamburg! And also a really good club - I love this place. Industrial and dirty, but not too dirty... kinda like the Crystal maze, but sadly without Richard O'Brian ;) The Hafenklang exil (Harbour Sound, Exile) is named after the previous venue near the habour was demolished, and they were exiled to this place.

Anyway, down to business. You've got a chilled out trancey bar upstairs with loads of seating, several emptyish poster covered rooms downstairs, and the main dancefloor also underground. Decent dj booth, but weirdly (well hey, this is germany) you can just about talk over the music, but it didn't detract. I believe it's open till 0800, so turn up anytime. dnb nights are 6 euro in, drinks are reasonable, music is awesome. I've not been to any of the other nights yet but it's my favourite club so far.

Qype: Frantic Music Club in Krakow

Krakow - Nightlife - Clubs

Great to see Frantic rated #1 in Krakow! We randomly came here and had a superb night, and luckily there was NOWHERE better to come! Music, crowd and atmosphere are all great, the main danger is banging your head on the cellar ceilings and low doorways. Which is always a consideration...

Qype: Stary Port in Kraków

Krakow - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Well well, not so well liked by the locals, no. However, I can't give this dive of a drinking hole any less than 4 stars, because when I left my camera and all my lenses there after one drunken evening, they were all there the next day!

It's a cellar affair, right near the university so tends to be packed with students. The crowd are really friendly, and it seemed cheap to us, but no idea about the relative pricing of things. Yes there are nicer bars in Krakow, but I'd definitely give it a go!

Qype: Chez Lindsay in London

London - Restaurants - French

Chez Lindsay is my favourite retaurant in Richmond by some margin. It's great value, and does a cracking range of Breton dishes - which means crepes, lovely dry cider in earthenware cups, and excellent seafood. The oysters here are out of this world, the mussels are excellent. For a main I really like the foie de veux with mash and peas. If you want to come for lunch you can get a crepe for around 3-5 pounds too. It's very friendly, very French, and very laid back. Recommended.

Qype: Railway Hotel in Nantwich

Nantwich - Travel & Hotels - Hotels

There are good pubs in Nantwich, I am sure. This sadly, isn't really one of them. We were desperately searching for somewhere decent that was open at 1630, not having occured to us that the wonderful Bhurtpore Inn at Aston could be closed, and happened upon The Railway. The theme is most definitely 'Beatles'. Memorabilia adorns every wall. Personally I was hoping for trains, and some atmosphere, but it was not to be. On the plus side, there is parking and a pool table in the back...

Qype: The Armoury in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Favourite haunt of Prince William when he's up doing helicopter training in Shropshire, but not the main reason I drink here! The Armoury is a bloody great pub in a really interesting old building, which may have been an Armoury. With a veritable legion of local real ales on tap, you'd be happy just drinking here. I had a delicious pint of Wood's Shropshire Lad for lunch, to wash down with my roast pigeon and black pudding salad, which was also divine. Fantastic stuff, and a great location on right on the River Severn.

Qype: The Spaniards Inn in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

I'd love to give the Spainard's another star, really I would, but this is not really the place to come on Saturday afternoons. In its favour, it's a great watering hole after a nice walk around Ken Wood, or one just around the roads of Hampstead if you're a Rolls Royce fan. It has a delicious menu, real ales and ciders on tap, and is extremely dog friendly. On the downside, why they have one person serving a pub with around 300 people baying to buy food and drink is really beyond me. We're talking literally 30 minute queues! They would actually make a lot more money if they had more staff on - bizarre. The other thing that lets it down is the food, fortunately not my food, my steak was delicious! But the portions of ham and cheese in the ploughmans were really quite pathetic, almost as if they had run out and were trying to cut ever-thinner slices for each plate. So, three stars from me for now, needs some work.

Qype: The Horseshoe Inn in Ratlinghope

Ratlinghope - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Fantastic country pub in set in the rolling hills of Shropshire, The Horseshoe Inn is a real hidden gem. I knew when I saw a puff of woodsmoke rising lazily over the crest of the road, that we were in for a treat, and I wasn't disappointed. Delicious ales, good solid pub grub, a wood burner, dogs welcome, and live music 5 nights a week. Open mic is on Monday, sadly I won't be there to check it out, but I'll certainly be popping in again. It's a cracking spot for walks along the brook, and what better place to return and rest those tired legs?

Qype: Wem's Kitchen in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury - Restaurants - Take Away

Great little Chinese takeaway on Wem High Street. Parking is slightly limited because the street is so narrow, but you're generally OK dumping your car on the pavement for 2 mins if you've phoned your order though in advance. I generally always go for the special fried rice - which comes with a load of pork on the top with some really nice 'red' sauce. Suspiciously red actually, but still really nice. They don't tend to top it off with a fried egg, but if they did, they'd be vying for that elusive 6th star...

Qype: Ti Breizh-Haus der Bretagne in Hamburg

Hamburg - Restaurants - French - Restaurants - Creperies

I have mixed feelings about this place. On one hand, I really like it, because I love crepes, and everything French. On the other hand, it worries me, as the first time I came in here I ended up 6 hours from death in hospital soon afterwards. OK - having my appendix out may have not been related, but still...

So I decided to brave another trip back here yesterday and really enjoyed it. It's slight over-popular, meaning lunch will take an hour, but the apple and cinnamon dessert crepe was just divine.

The set menu of a savoury gallette plus a dessert crepe and cider or coffee will set you back around 8 euros.

Qype: Photoautomat in Hamburg

Hamburg - Shopping - Photo

Always wanted to meet Audrey Tautou? Me too, that's why I spend all of my free time loitering around this particular photo booth. It's of the type that uses intensely bright flash, bubbling chemicals, and only prints in black and white - yielding a hilarious result which means you'll be laughing by the third shot, and therefore get something you like! Compare this to the lifeless, soulless, trashy "photo-me" monopoly in the UK, with an annoying computer woman patronising you into looking stupid, and you'll be glad you came to Germany.

I never did meet Amelie, but I will.

Qype: York & Albany in London

London - Restaurants - Gourmet

Fantastic edition to the Ramsey stable, and poppers were off the menu! Ho ho. The set lunch was priced at 18GBP for 3 courses, which was great value considering the quality of the food. Wine and the various trimmings easily double it though, which makes it more of a luxury trip. I had parma ham with chicory and preserved pears to start, followed by a lovely roast lamb on puy lentils, and a sublime vanilla pannacotta to finish. Ambiance is good, fairly simple decor, jeans are fine, but trainers probably aren't. Highly recommended.

Qype: The Electric Evergreen Express in Hamburg

Hamburg - Concerts & Festivals - Experimental

Fantastic oddball trio we happened to catch in Crazy Horst last night. The are a father, son and daughter team playing keyboards, drums and bass respectively, and are quite hiliarious. Don't miss them next time!

Qype: Crazy Horst in Hamburg

Hamburg - Pubs & Bars - Bars

Extremely fun bar on Hein-Hoyer Straße in darkest, coldest St. Pauli. We were desperate to get into here last night since the ambient temperature had dropped to "leg-stingingly cold". I opened the door to find a full bar and none other than Benny, Luba Luft's top mixologist at the only gig to be seen at last night! Top fun!

I might form a tribute band and call it Neil Young and Crazy Horst, and play a gig here...

Qype: Bree Louise in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Five pounds for homemade pie, chips and gravy, and 50p off a pint for CAMRA members? As a card carrier myself, I say, yes please, 4! And we did quite literally eat 4 pies, between 4 of course, and they were all delicious. Who says there are no good pubs around Euston?! Well I used to, but no longer, the Bree Louise is a gem. Spent quite a while chatting to the landlord about his new 11 barrel gravity delivery system, which uses sprung counterbalances to gradually tip the barrel as it empties. Clever stuff! What it means for you is delicious bitter all the time - like a permanent beer festival! They even print the last train times in the menu!
